The laughter vanished from inside me and my voice came out much colder than it had in a long time.

I couldn’t say it, not in front of all the Hoskins clan. I might not be a Somerville any longer, and I might not owe them any loyalty, but being the Guardian – which Glimmer was – meant danger. I didn’t want anyone to know any more about him than they needed to. I didn’t want him in danger.
